The SCM of Aotearoa/New Zealand began in 1896 when John R Mott toured Australia and New Zealand. During the 1920s and 1930s the movement began to relate current political issues to Christian faith. The 1970s and 1980s saw increased support for the struggle of the Maori people and challenging Pakeha (European New Zealanders) on issues of racism. After a decline in membership in the 1980s the movement was re-launched in 1990 with a focus on sexuality, gender and creating a relevant theology for Aotearoa/New Zealand.
SCM Aotearoa, which is affiliated to the World Student Christian Federation, is a movement which recognises the Māori people as tangata whenua of Aotearoa and accepts the Treaty of Waitangi as the basis of its constitution. Its aims are:
