SCM Singapore is organising a series of environmental activities starting in July to highlight the huge impact that the recent urban landscape development has created to the environment in Singapore. The first in the series started in the first week of July with a visit to the natural reserves of Pulau Ubin which is undergoing many changes to its landscape as the country embarked on plans of developing it into a holiday resort. This visit will be followed up with a discussion and reflection on urban living/development in the face of compromising the environment. This activity saw a registration of more than 15 students and youths which SCM Singapore was very excited about.

Exposure in Philippines On 16-25 June, amid daily news reports of the Abu Sayaf kidnappings, a group of three intrepid Singaporean SCMers went on an exposure to the Philippines. In the safe hands of host SCM Philippines, the participants experienced the conditions of the urban poor living next to the “Mountain of Garbage” at Payatas, Manila. Next, they went island hopping to Mindoro Oriental, where they witnessed examples of discrimination against the indigenous Mangyan people, stayed in Mangyan communities, and experienced and heard about the terrible reality of militarization in Mindoro. The 3 participants returned with new and unexpected understanding of the Philippines.

Annual General Meeting
SCM Singapore held its Annual General Meeting on 20th May 2001. Senior friends at the meeting highlighted the need for SCM to improve its visibility in the community. In response, the newly elected General Committee has embarked on an ambitious Tuition Programme to reach out to Pre-University students. It is hoped that the programme will arrest the decline in student participation and membership in SCM Singapore.
