Women Leadership Training in Myanmar
The Women Leadership Training was held from October 6 to 9, 2008 in Yangon, 30 young women were selected to participate in the training with 4 SCM staff, 4 facilitators.
This program was aim to promote women leadership in local units The specific objectives were—to study and reflect Bible and do theology from feminist perspectives—to understand the role of women in the history of ecumenical movement -to promote women leadership in student movement and society.
The contents of the training were Capacity Building for Women Leadership, Gender, Legal Rights, Women’s Sexuality and Contemporary issues of young women.
The programme was effective in order to acquire knowledge on the said topics and creative activities. This would also help the young women to take leadership roles in ecumenical movements, local SCM and Churches.
Ecumenical Study Camp
The Ecumenical Study Camp was conducted in Wet-thay (Pathein) from 7-13 October and was participated by a total of 170 students from all units throughout the country. The theme of the camp was “Abundant Life”.
The topics presented covered on the following issues:
- Christian Ethics in response to the changes in the world according to the will of God
- Biblical reflection on Ecumenical Concepts
- Case study analysis on current social issues
- Education in Myanmar
Technological Students Study Seminar
This Study Seminar was held on 11-18 August at Mandalay and 19 students took part. This programme focused on the will of God and Science, Information Technology, Faith, Science and Technology. The biblical reflection emphasized on the notion of “Technology being a part of Creation”.
Prayer For Peace
In the ecumenical spirit and partnership, the Myanmar Ecumenical Youth And Students Team, comprising of SCM, MCC-Youth, YMCA, YWCA and Catholic Youth, organised a “Prayer For Peace” programme on 25 October at the Myanmar Ecumenical Sharing Center in Yangon. 65 youth and students participated in this activity. This activity is a part of the national level gathering under the Asia-Pacific Student and Youth Week celebrations organised by the Ecumenical Asia-Pacific Student and Youth Network (EASYNet).
Women Leadership Training
This training programme was held on 27-31 July with 54 students from the local units. This programme aims at promoting the leadership role of women students in the local units. The topics presented were Social Justice, Leadership, Human Trafficking, Legal Rights, Ethics, Sexuality and Spirituality.
National Students Women’s Leadership Training:
“Protect the Image of God”The National Students Women’s Leadership programme was held on 10-14 June 2002, at the Myanmar Christian Council. The theme of this annual programme was “Protect the Image of God”. There were altogether 25 students, both women and men from all SCM units in Myanmar who participated in this programme. Wong Yock Leng, Regional Women’s Coordinator of WSCF AP, was also invited as a resource person for the session on “How to Construct Self Confidence and Self Esteem”. Along with this session, the other sessions were, “Impacts of Globalisation Upon Women”, “Media Violence”, “Women & Environment”, “Impact of Gender Unbalance in Society” and “Psychology & Violence”.
Ecumenical Study Camp
Myanmar SCM organized an Ecumenical Study Camp in Monywa (North West Part of Myanmar) on October 10-15, 2001. The theme of the camp was “Commitment”. Inputs were given by Shwe Saw Lin (Spirit of SCM), Harry Tan Naung (Ecumenism), Rev. Kya Nyunt (the Role of Students in Society), Rev. Kyaw Moe (Ethics), and the Bible Study was conducted by Rev. Matthew Aye.
So far, the University and College education is at a chaos while there is also a crisis for leadership among the University Students all over the country. The camp therefore was a good venue to recruit leader of the new generation. The Camp was also a challenge to the Christian students for their new commitment.
